yeah, try to focus on mixing shape with line, which I'm sure you've heard before, but that the first thing. And pick an image that you're actually happy to work on. Because of how labor intensive carving is, you'll get a better cut the more excited you are about the picture because you'll have a great idea for how you want the final piece to work.
